Crigger Leads Vols To Top-5 Finish At Arturo Barrios Invitational
October 19, 2019 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Led by a top-15 individual finish from junior Alex Crigger, Tennessee men's cross country placed fifth out of 26 teams at the Arturo Barrios Invitational Saturday morning. This marks the end of the regular season as the program gears up for the SEC Championships in less than two weeks.
"Crigger is shaping up into great form this fall," head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said following the meet. "He ran a quick time on a fast course and was very competitive. Moved through the race well, especially down the home stretch. He put the work in this summer and it's paying off for his junior season."
A Johnson City native, Crigger clocked in at 24:07.3 for his fastest 8K of the 2019 cross country campaign, placing 14th overall. Sophomore Karl Thiessen was the next man across for the Vols as the Abingdon, Va. native recorded a time of 24:32.7 for 33rd place.
Tennessee redshirt-sophomore John Elrod finished 44th in 24:46.7, while Conner Hawkins (25:08.6) and Max Barbour (25:09.0) completed the Tennessee top five finishing 67th and 69th, respectively.
Other finishers for the Vols included Adam Johnston (25:29.4), Brayden Hamblen (25:53.2) and Devin Sullivan (26:13.5).
"We definitely ran well compared to two weeks ago at Lehigh," Sullivan said. "Pitt beat us there, and we got them back this time. The guys got out aggressive in the early part of the race, lost some ground in the middle but closed well down the stretch and ended up fifth. Overall, I'm pleased with our efforts moving forward towards the SEC Championships.
"I'd also like to give a shout out to [volunteer assistant coach and Tennessee alum] Zach Long. He did a great job having the men prepared for this race, and his leadership as a coach is having a great impact on this program."
UP NEXT: Tennessee will travel to Lexington, Ky. for the 2019 SEC Cross Country Championships. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. with the men's 8K.
