TULSA, Okla. – Tennessee junior Adam Walton sees his run at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships come to an end Friday after winning his Round of 16 match up, but falling in the quarterfinal at the Case Tennis Center.
Walton, the nation's 17th-ranked player, squared off against No. 13 Juan Carlos Aguilar from Texas A&M in the Round of 16. The Home Hill, Australia native defeated Aguilar in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2, advancing to the quarterfinal round.
In the quarters, he faced the nation's fourth-ranked player, Texas' Yuya Ito. Walton fell to Ito in two sets, 5-7, 2-6. The loss ends his run at the ITA All-American Championships.
"It was a good run for Walton, he is definitely proving to be one of the best players in college tennis," associate head coach James McKie said. "He now knows what he needs to work on in order to make another jump in his development."
Tennessee fared well at the ITA All-American Championships, two players, Pat Harper and Martim Prata, advanced out of the pre-qualifying round to compete in the qualifying draw. In addition, all eight players UT sent to Oklahoma for the tournament notched at least one victory with four players winning multiple matches.
"Overall, it was a decent tournament for our guys," McKie said. "We are definitely competitive against the best teams in the country but we now need someone else to step up."
