JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – After winning the Intercollegiate at the Grove, the Tennessee men's golf team is back in front after the opening round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The Vols shot a new season-low with a first round score with a 273 (-15) on Friday. All four Tennessee players who counted in the first round were under par with three of them being four-under-par or lower. The Vols ended the day on fire as they were 12-under-par on the back nine to give themselves a one-stroke lead into tomorrow.
After finishing tied for second earlier this week in College Grove, redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott is back in contention for another individual title. He carded an opening round 67 (-5) and tied for fourth along with redshirt junior Chip Thomas.
Wolcott opened the competition with a birdie on No. 1 and finished the day without a bogey. He tallied five birdies in the round including three over the final five holes.
Like Wolcott, Thomas spent much of his day below par after a birdies on the par-4 first hole. After entering the turn at one-under-par for his round, he tallied four more birdies on the back nine to elevate himself into the top five on the leaderboard.
Junior Spencer Cross sits just one stroke back of them in a tie for eighth after 18 holes of play. Cross was even par for his round entering the back nine before four birdies helped push him into the top 10, individually.
Tennessee will tee off the second round tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET. The Vols will be paired with Louisville (-14) and Furman (-11) who are second and third, respectively.
