After winning at the Intercollegiate at the Grove, Tennessee takes part in second in-state tournament this week
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After starting the week at the Intercollegiate at the Grove, the University of Tennessee men's golf team closes out the week at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, with the first round set for Friday.
The field features 15 teams with the Vols entering as one of three SEC teams including Missouri and Ole Miss. Power-5 schools in Louisville, NC State Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech are also in the tournament field.
Tennessee is coming off its first tournament title of the season after winning the Intercollegiate at the Grove by 16 strokes over the field. Nine of the 10 players the Vols had in the field finished inside of the top 25 on the leaderboard with five placing inside of the top 10.
With a final round 68 (-4), redshirt junior Tyler Johnson took home his first individual collegiate title. The Knoxville, Tennessee native finished 6-under-par at the event, winning by two strokes over the field.
Redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott was one of those players who tied for second and two strokes back of Johnson. Wolcott picked up his highest finish of the season while posting two rounds of par or better to help lead Tennessee to the team title.
Johnson, who has played in two events this season as an individual, will make his first appearance in the lineup this season, playing out of the No. 5 spot at Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.
Last season, Tennessee placed third in the event posting a season low score of 29-under-par. Johnson and senior Rhys Nevin both finished inside of the top 10 as four Vols picked up top-25 finished.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled for a start at 9:15 a.m. (ET) with Johnson being the first Vol to tee off No. 1. The Vols will be paired with host East Tennessee State and Ole Miss on the opening day of play.
The Vols' Lineup
Rhys Nevin
Nevin turned in his third top-25 performance of the season as he tied for 13th in the Intercollegiate at the Grove. In eight rounds played in the lineup, Nevin has counted in seven of them this season, a 83.33 average.
Spencer Cross
For the third time in as many starts this season, Cross picked up a top-25 finish. The junior tied for fourth in the competition, his highest finish this season. He was helped by two 1-under-par rounds.
Chip Thomas
Thomas picked up his first top-10 finish as a member of the Tennessee team on Tuesday when he tied for eighth in College Grove, Tennessee. He turned a final round 70 (-2) to help him finish below par for the tournament.
Hunter Wolcott
The Burns, Tennessee native is coming off his highest finish of the season at the Intercollegiate at the Grove. Wolcott was helped by an opening round 68 (-4) recording a round of even par in the final round.
Tyler Johnson
Johnson enters the lineup for the first time of the season after playing inside of the Vols lineup for nearly the entire season in 2018. He comes in leading the team with a 69.80 stroke average in five rounds this season.
Vols' Individual
Jake Hall
The redshirt freshman was one of nine Vols players to place inside of the top 25 at the Intercollegiate at the Grove. The Knoxville, Tennessee native carded a collegiate-low 70 (-2) to help him into a tie for 20th.
Bryce Lewis
Behind Johnson, Lewis was the Vols second highest finisher among the five individuals in College Grove, Tennessee. The redshirt freshman tied for 13th along with Nevin at 1-over-par for the tournament.
