January 08, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series opens this week with Olympians, national team members and current Vols in action at Allan Jones Aquatic Center.Â
The meet runs Wednesday through Saturday in Tennessee's home waters. Wednesday just features a night session with the 800-meter freestyle at 6 p.m. Eastern. For the next three days, preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
The world-class talent in the field includes Olympic gold medalists Katie Ledecky (5 Olympic gold medals in 2016; 14 long course world titles), Ryan Murphy (3 Olympic golds in 2016), Matt Grevers (4 Olympic golds) and Simone Manuel (2 Olympic golds in 2016). Olympic medalists Kathleen Baker, Kelsi Dahlia, Chase Kalisz and Olivia Smoliga are also among the entries.Â
Tennessee graduate Molly Hannis leads the Tennessee contingent into the weekend. The 2016 Olympian graduated from UT in 2015, and Knoxville still serves as her home base for professional training. She is seeded first in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke and eighth in the 200 breaststroke.Â
Ten current Tennessee swimmers are entered in the meet. Notably, junior Taylor Abbott is seeded third in Saturday's men's 1500 freestyle. Fellow junior Tess Cieplucha is listed in a team-leading three events (800 free, 200m IM, 200 back). A full listing of UT competitors is at the end of the release.
In addition to the TYR Pro Swim Series event, the Vols will also compete in a road dual meet at Virginia on Friday.Â
TICKETS: All-session and single-session tickets are available at the USA Swimming link. All-sessions general admissions passes are $60 for adults and $45 for children, and current Tennessee students can purchase a discounted pass for $30. Single session tickets are $10 adults/$5 children for preliminaries and Wednesday's timed final and $15 adults/$10 children for evening finals.
