KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman Nebraska transfer Mason Meier has joined the Tennessee men's tennis program in time for the 2019 spring season, head coach Chris Woodruff announced Monday.Â
Meier, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, was a three-time Class B state singles champion for Elkhorn High School and led his squad to two team championships. He was a five-star blue chip recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, earning a career-best national ranking of 22nd.Â
"I'm really excited to welcome Mason to Tennessee," Woodruff said. "He will fit nicely into our program. Mason is a good student, hard worker and has lots of experience that can contribute to our team. We are expecting him to be a great Vol."
Meier played in one collegiate tournament during the fall semester for Nebraska, reaching the semifinals of the Drake Invitational. In November, he reached the quarterfinals of the USTA Boys 18 National Indoor Championships as the ninth seed.Â
In 2017, he won an ITA Summer Circuit title at the University of Nebraska and the Missouri Valley Sweet 16s singles title.Â
Meier won't be the only new Vol on the tennis courts this spring. Martim Prata (Lisbon, Portugal) signed in November and has already joined the squad for preseason training. He is a two-time U18 Portugal national singles champion.Â
The Vols open the 2019 season Jan. 19 with a home doubleheader against Charlotte at Goodfriend Tennis Center beginning at 10 a.m.Â
