Shaw Named to CONCACAF Female Best XI
January 15, 2019 | Soccer
MIAMI - Tennessee soccer standout Bunny Shaw was selected to the 2018 CONCACAF Female Best XI for her play with the Jamaican national team this past fall, as the confederation announced its annual awards Tuesday afternoon.
Â
In an equally-weighted vote among national team head coaches, national team captains, experts from the media and millions of fans, Shaw finished as the runner-up for CONCACAF Female Player of the Year behind American standout Alex Morgan. Additionally, Shaw's game-winner against Cuba was tabbed as Goal of the Year on the women's side.
Â
A striker from Spanish Town, Jamaica, Shaw split duties with the Vols and Reggae Girlz during the summer and fall of 2018. Across 13 matches of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, Shaw connected on 19 goals to help lead her country to new heights in the sport of women's soccer. Jamaica claimed a third-place finish at the CONCACAF Championships in October, earning an automatic bid to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France and becoming the first Carribean nation to ever qualify for a women's World Cup in the history of the event.
Â
Despite the back and forth, Shaw never missed a beat on the pitch for Tennessee as she guided the Volunteers to arguably their best season in program history. UT reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time behind its star forward, who led the squad with 13 goals, six assists and 32 points during the 2018 campaign. Postseason honors for Shaw included First Team All-SEC, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-America.
Â
In addition to those accolades, Shaw was recently bestowed with the prestigious honor of being named The Guardian's 2018 Footballer of the Year last month. The annual award is designated for one player worldwide who has done something truly remarkable, whether by overcoming adversity, helping others or setting a sporting example by acting with exceptional honesty. Previous winners include Manchester United's Juan Mata and Cagliari's Fabio Pisacane.
