Tennessee comes from 2-1 sets down, defeating Razorbacks in five sets
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee volleyball team claimed its second-straight home Southeastern Conference win with a 3-2 victory over the University of Arkansas Sunday afternoon in Thompson-Boling Arena.
Senior Erica Treiber recorded a team-high of 15 kills in the match along with two service aces. Sophomore Addisyn Rowe collected the highest hitting percentage (.520) for Tennessee, totaling 11 kills in the middle.
For the second straight match, the Lady Vols came out victorious in five sets. They were able to capitalize on three attack errors by the Razorbacks, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead in the fifth set.
From there, Tennessee had total control hitting .375 in the final set while holding the Razorbacks to only .048 percent, their lowest in the match.
After falling 25-18 in the first, the Lady Vols (12-4, 3-1 SEC) claimed the second set 25-20, evening the game at 1-1. The Razorbacks (6-8, 0-4 SEC) went on to win the next set 25-22, taking the 2-1 edge.
Tennessee responded in the fourth set with a 25-22 victory in a back-and-forth battle. After a timeout from head coach Eve Rackham at 22-22, the Lady Vols rattled off the last three point as Rowe capped it off with a kill in the middle to send it to five sets. In total, the fourth frame had a total of three lead changes and was tied 11 times.
From Coach Rackham:
On sweeping the weekend against Missouri and Arkansas:
"I'm glad we went 2-0. Any match we win in the SEC is huge. Anyone in the conference is capable and both those teams were great opponents. I'm happy we were able to protect our home court and win those two matches. Our team certainly got better playing two five set matches. It was a really good experience for some of our younger kids." -- Head Coach Eve Rackham
From Erica Treiber:
On what she saw when she went up to attack:
"I was just seeing open court. As a middle, it is all about being crafty, finding the open zone, getting up quick and making it hard for the other team to defend the quick ball. So, when I'm up early it's easy to see some court." -- Erica Treiber
On how the team feels at the start of SEC play:
"I think we are in a good spot. Every game in the SEC is tough and every team is good. Every game we go in with a mentality that it might be hard but, we are going to work." -- Erica Treiber
Standout Stat:
Tennessee continues SEC conference play against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The Lady Vols look to pick up its third-straight home win against Alabama on Wednesday in Thompson-Boiling Arena. It will be a head-to-head match-up between the Perinar sisters as Raquel Perinar welcomes her sister, Ginger, and the Crimson Tide to town.
First serve for the match is slated for 8 p.m. (ET) on the SEC Network.
