August 31, 2018 | Volleyball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the fourth straight season, the University of Tennessee volleyball team begins the season 4-0.
The Lady Vols defeated Winthrop in three sets Friday night making it their third straight 3-0 victory of the season. Tennessee has dropped just one set in the 2018 season.
Backed by junior Tessa Grubbs fourth double-digit kill match of the season, Tennessee took early control of the match. Up 19-13 in the first set with sophomore Callie Williams on serve, the Lady Vols took the final six points on the set which ended with a Williams' ace. She ended the match with three and now leads the team with six on the season.
Senior Brooke Schumacher put herself in the Tennessee record books with a game-high 18 digs. Schumacher is now 10th in program history in career digs passing Kelli Scott (1999-02) and Bridgette Villano (2013-16) who were tied for 10th with 1,117 entering the Friday.
The Lady Vols will look for their 10th 5-0 start in program history when they square off against North Florida tomorrow afternoon.
From Coach Rackham
On Callie Williams serving
"Callie Williams went on a really big serving run tonight. It seemed like every time she went back there we scored points. She helped us separate ourselves from Winthrop," –Coach Eve Rackham
On Brooke Schumacher
"She comes to practice ready to play hard every day. She loves to play defense, it's something that she is really passionate about. She has great speed and she is fearless. Good defenders are willing to throw themselves wherever to get the ball up and that's one of her best attributes. She really gets after it defensively and this team needs that from a leadership standpoint. I don't think there's a ball Brooke doesn't think she can dig." –Coach Rackham
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols conclude the Rocky Top Invitational tomorrow when they face off against North Florida and Indiana State. Both games will air on WatchESPN with the North Florida match set for 12:30 p.m. and Indiana State for 7:30 p.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena.
