No. 13 Vols blank Musketeers 3-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 13 Tennessee posted its third-straight home shutout as the Volunteers topped the Xavier Musketeers 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium. Three different Vols tallied goals within a span of 10 minutes to seal the victory.
Freshman forward Amy Thompson opened the scoring for Tennessee (3-0-1) in the 37th minute off a double assist from McKinley Burkett and Salera Jordan. Burkett back-heeled the ball to Jordan, who flicked a pass to Thompson in the left side of the box. Thompson took a touch and fired a shot inside the right netting to put the Vols ahead 1-0.
Midfielder Katie Cousins recorded Tennessee's second tally on a penalty kick early in the second half. After Danielle Marcano took a hard foul in the box, Cousins stepped up and put the ball past the Xavier keeper to double Tennessee's advantage in the 47th minute.
25 seconds later, the Vols found the back of the net for a third time on a goal from senior midfielder Anna Bialczak. Wrenne French punted a ball in the box that Marcano headed off the post, and Bialczak was there for the rebound to score on an empty net for her first goal of the 2018 campaign.
Through the first four matches of her collegiate career, Thompson has tallied three game-winning goals for the Lady Vols. The program's all-time freshman record for game-winning goals is four, held by the trio of Melissa Covington (1996), Rhian Wilkinson (2000) and Hannah Wilkinson (2012).
The Vols outshot Xavier (1-3-0) 17-6 for the match, including a dominant 11-1 edge in the second half. UT goalkeeper Shae Yanez and the UT back line held the Musketeers scoreless for 86:21 before Charli Pogany made her Tennessee debut and preserved the shutout over the final 3:39 of action.
