July 06, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Coming off a top-25 ranked season, the Tennessee soccer program looks to continue the upward momentum in 2018 under seventh-year head coach Brian Pensky.Â
The Vols are slated to play 18 regular-season matches with 10 on their home turf at Regal Soccer Stadium. The team opens the year with a home exhibition against Alabama on Aug. 10 (6 p.m. Eastern) and begins the regular season Aug. 16 at home against St. John's (7 p.m.).
The 10-game Southeastern Conference schedule begins at home against South Carolina on Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. Additional home SEC matches include: Mississippi State (Sept. 23), Vanderbilt (Oct. 7), LSU (Oct. 18) and Missouri (Oct. 25).Â
Admission is free to all regular-season games at Regal Soccer Stadium.Â
The SEC Tournament will be held Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 at Orange Beach, Alabama. The NCAA Tournament opening weekend is Nov. 16-18. The 2018 NCAA Women's College Cup is Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 in Cary, North Carolina. Â
The Lady Vols put together a 15-4-2 record in 2017, reaching the second round of the NCAA Championships. The team ended the year ranked No. 25 in the United Coaches poll and No. 16 in the NCAA RPI.
All-American junior midfielder Katie Cousins is back, alongside five returning All-SEC and/or United Coaches All-Region award members (forward Khadija Shaw, defender Maya Neal, midfielder Anna Bialczak, forward Erin Gilroy and midfielder Rylie O'Keefe).Â
Shaw was the team's leading scorer last year with 14 goals, the second-most in program history, including eight goals in league play. As a member of the Jamaican National Team, she scored eight goals in the CONCACAF Caribbean Women's Qualifier in May, helping the team into the next round of World Cup qualifying.Â
Neal put together a notable athletic year all around. In addition to her All-SEC and all-region honors in soccer, she was also a second-team All-American in track and field, placing 13th in the NCAA heptathlon.Â
Gilroy has been training with the U20 U.S. National Team this summer, scoring a goal in a 2-1 victory over Brazil earlier this week.Â
