Williams Advances to NCAA Championship as an Individual
May 09, 2018 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Micheala Williams shot her third round below par this week, a 1-under 71, to place seventh and advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma, as an individual.
"I started out pretty rough," Williams said, "but I came back with a birdie on the par five and I settled in after that and made a couple more birdies."
Williams finished the NCAA Tallahassee Regional nine strokes below par, shooting 67 and 69 during the first two rounds for a 54-hole total of 207. Her three-day tally is the Lady Vols' second lowest of the season.
"I'm really proud of Micheala because she knew where she stood and she finished strong and she did what she had to do," head coach Judi Pavon said.
As a team, Tennessee concluded the regional in 11th place, missing the six-team cut. The Volunteers shot 878 (+14) through three rounds on the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course to wrap up the 2017-18 season.
"This was not a good week for us," Pavon said. "Micheala played well and Waverly had two good rounds out of the three, so we're looking forward to them returning and really playing well for us next season."
Freshman Waverly Whiston matched Williams' third round score and concluded her first NCAA Regional tied for 49th place (222, +6).
Ariana Macioce, a junior from Phoenix, Arizona, finished the tournament with a score of 226 (+10) to tie for 63rd.
Both of Tennessee's seniors, Blakesly Warren and Anna Newell, carded 79 in the final round. The duo tied for 71st (228, +12) and 79th (230, +14), respectively.
Claiming the regional title, No. 2 Alabama capped off its 33-under (831) performance with a final round of 273. Florida State came in second with a 54-hole score of 839 (-25) while No. 7 Furman placed third with an 18-under 846.
Individually, Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho took home medalist honors after shooting a 15-under 201.
The top six teams and three individuals not on those teams advanced to the NCAA National Championship held on May 18-23, 2018, hosted by Oklahoma State at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
