KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No 7/10 Tennessee scored seven runs in the second inning to propel its way to a 11-3 win over ETSU on Tuesday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
With the win, the Lady Vols (38-8) improve to 124-3 all-time against teams from the state of Tennessee. The Buccaneers (13-23) scored a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth in the losing effort.Â
Tennessee's offensive outburst in the second inning was started by a leadoff home run from Abby Lockman over the left field fence. After Cailin Hannon reached on a fielder's choice and made her way to second via a CJ McClain single, she was driven in to score on an Aubrey Leach base knock that made it 2-0. The next batter Amanda Ayala would bring in two more runs with a single of her own to right center. Ayala then stole second and scored on a single from Chelsea Seggern. Seggern and Scarlet McSwain came in to tally the final two runs of the frame on a fielding error.Â
UT kept pouring it on in the third inning to make it a 9-0 game. McClain led things off with another single before she was brought all the way around by a triple from Leach. Leach would score on the following pitch, a passed ball.Â
The Bucs answered with a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. In the fourth, Tiffany Laughren hit a single up the middle to score Kelly Warren. The next inning, ETSU got a pair of runners on with no outs via back-to-back walks. Julia Fritz then hit a ground ball to second base that was mishandled, allowing Emma Martindale to come around from second and get the Bucs on the board. Kelsey Chernak later tagged up from third to score on a Vanessa Elliott sacrifice fly.
Tennessee would close out the game with two runs in the sixth that put the margin at eight. Seggern led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second on a fielding error. Freshman Ashley Morgan then dropped a blooper into left center for an RBI double as Seggern made it home from second. A fielding error on the next pitch brought around Morgan and clinched the victory for UT.
Caylan Arnold improved to 18-4 in a three inning effort. The sophomore recorded one strikeout and gave up one hit.Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this weekend for a three-game series against No. 17/17 Alabama beginning on Saturday, April 21.
