Vols Drop Game One of Series, 6-1, to South Carolina
March 29, 2018 | Baseball
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tennessee struggled to get the bats going against South Carolina on Thursday night, dropping game one of the series, 6-1.
The Volunteers are now 17-10 overall and hold a 4-3 record in conference play while the Gamecocks are 15-12 on the season and own a 2-5 SEC record.
In the first inning, South Carolina capitalized on a Tennessee error to plate three unearned runs and take a 3-0 lead.
The Gamecocks threw two more runs on the board in the third, using four hits and a walk, before scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to extend their advantage to 6-0.
The Vols put a runner in scoring position for the first time of the night in the sixth as sophomore Justin Ammons reached on an error by South Carolina's second baseman. He advanced to second on a 3-1 groundout by Jay Charleston, but the inning ended on back-to-back lineouts to the right side before UT could scratch a run across.
Freshman Evan Russell broke up South Carolina's no-hitter with a two-out single through the right side in the seventh inning. He was left stranded at first as a flyout was recorded in the next at-bat.
The Vols scored their only run of the night in the eighth. To lead off the inning, sophomore Brandon Chinea knocked a single through the right side. He then took advantage of a South Carolina throwing error that sailed by the second baseman to advance to third before Charleston reached base on a hit-by-pitch, putting runners on the corners. Back-to-back wild pitches then scored Chinea, trimming the Gamecocks' lead 6-1.
Right-handed pitchers Andrew Schultz and Richard Jackson combined to throw a hitless final frame for UT, striking out one and forcing a 5-3 double play to get out of the inning. In the ninth, Tennessee was retired in order to end the game.
Charged with his third loss of the season, starting pitcher Garrett Crochet allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out four batters through 4.2 innings of work. Tennessee's relievers combined to throw 3.1 shutout innings, giving up just one hit while fanning three.
South Carolina's Adam Hill earned the win, recording 5.0 hitless innings and four strikeouts in the outing before handing the ball over to the bullpen which gave up one run and two hits.
