Cleveland, Powers Named to SEC Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee senior Alex Cleveland and junior Ty Powers were named to the SEC Swimming and Diving Community Service Team, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Throughout her life, Cleveland and her family have worked as puppy raisers for Canine Companions for Independence, an organization that trains assistance dogs for those in need. This year, she has been training a dog named Picket on campus, as she has with several dogs during her Tennessee career.
A native of Zionsville, Indiana, Cleveland has also coached young swimmers with the Emerald Youth Foundation, a Knoxville leadership program for urban youth. Alongside her teammates, she has volunteered at the Man Run, a 5K organized by the University of Tennessee Medical Center that raises proceeds to benefit prostate cancer research and educational programs. She has also visited students at the Tennessee School for the Deaf.
Cleveland earned relay All-America honors last season and was also a CSCAA Scholar All-American in addition to a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient.
She is graduating with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology in May. She plans to join the Peace Corps in Africa.
A native of Clermont, Georgia, Powers participated in the Anti-Bullying Campaign, or ABC, at Coulter Grove Intermediate earlier this year. He also worked at the Man Run and visited the Tennessee School for the Deaf. He helped serve a holiday meal for those less fortunate in the Knoxville Community. He also participated in Voloween, a Halloween event for children of staff and faculty on the Tennessee campus.
He is a communications studies major and a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
