UT Medals At HOCR, Puts Five Boats On The Podium At Secret City
October 20, 2018 | Rowing
"We got a good majority of our team out on the course for competition last weekend; some competed in their first regatta, while others added race experience to a long line of competitive experiences," said Tennessee head rowing coach Lisa Glenn.  "We saw racing and execution that reflected our daily preparation so far this year, and I credit all of our crews for that."
At HOCR, Tennessee's weekend was highlighted by a second-place finish in the Women's Club Four event on Saturday. Camryn Farren coxed the crew of Ashley Ball, Abbi Altman, Kirsten Girard, Kristen Freeman to a time of 18:44.443, besting 51 other entries. In a race separated by tenths of a second, Marist took first in the event with a time of 18:44.285.
In the Women's Club 8+ the Lady Vols made it down the course in 17:39.423 but incurred a 1-minute penalty due to a rules violation. The adjusted time of 18:39.423 put them in 24th place out of 33 entries. Yale took first place with a time of 17:10.341.
"Regarding the Club 8 in Boston, that was an exciting crew with an opportunity to advance our position in the event. They raced with obvious intention to do so," said Glenn. "As outside factors came into play toward the home stretch of the course, the crew found themselves in a situation which required difficult split-second decision making.  I take responsibility for any deficit in preparation for that type of scenario and credit our coxswain for how she handled herself with officials and her crew after the fact."
On Sunday at HOCR, UT took ninth out of 19 entries in the Women's Championship Fours with a time of 20:31.986, besting other universities such as Iowa, Indiana, Boston College, Princeton and UMass. DRV Potsdam had the top time of 19:41.020.
"The atmosphere we created around the Boston event allowed us to readily identify where our strengths are, who our leaders under pressure are, and where we are falling short at this time," said Glenn. "We will meet about that and address those things as we move into the off season of preparation for the spring campaign."
At the Secret City Head Race Tennessee put five boats on the podium across two events, the Women's Collegiate 8+ and Women's Novice 8+.Â
The crew of Hannah Major, Jessica Magnoli, Tessa Kimmy, Lindsey Morrissett, Gia Hodges, Allie Asbury, Rebecca Caruso, Sarah Warner and Ashley Van Roon took the top time in the Women's Collegiate 8+ with a time of 19:46.7, besting four other entries. The Lady Vols Varsity B boat took second with a time of 20:16.2.
In the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+, Nicole Esslinger guided the crew of Emma Johnson, Emma Loy, Maury Wittekind, Sadira Austin, Anna Zickovich, Taylor McDermott, Annie Miller and Lindsey Jones to a first place finish with a time of 20:28.5. UT had five total novice boats competing, taking first, second, third, fourth and sixth in the event.
