Shaw's Golden Goal Vaults #18 Tennessee Over LSU, 2-1
October 18, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Less than 30 hours after helping the Jamaican National Team secure its first-ever World Cup berth, Tennessee senior Bunny Shaw scored a golden goal to lift UT past LSU 2-1 Thursday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.
Â
Shaw's match winner came in the 108th minute of play during the second overtime period, as the forward from Spanish Town, Jamaica headed a ball into the back of the net off a corner kick from Katie Cousins. It was Shaw's fifth game-winning goal of the season, which ties for the lead in the SEC.
LSU (9-6-1, 3-4-1 SEC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a goal from senior forward Alex Thomas. Sophomore striker Tinaya Alexander dribbled the ball from beyond the midline into the heart of the box, flicking a pass to Thomas who connected on a three-yard score.
Junior defender MA Vignola equalized the match in the 58th minute on a rocket shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner. The goal was assisted on a long volley from the left side off the foot of senior midfielder Anna Bialczak.
Tennessee (11-2-2, 5-2-1 SEC) broke a 22-year-old record with 20 corner kicks for the match. The previous program mark of 16 was set in UT's inaugural match against Chattanooga, a 7-0 win for the Big Orange on Aug. 30, 1996.
Â
Shots were 27-15 in favor of the Lady Vols, led by six from Erin Gilroy and five from Vignola. Shaw logged four shot attempts in limited action, with three of those on target. Senior keeper Shae Yanez held strong after giving up the opening goal, hauling in four saves over the final 65 minutes of action.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will travel to College Station, Texas for its final road match of the regular season at No. 5 Texas A&M on Sunday. Kickoff between the Vols and Aggies is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
