Vols Start Tennis Season 2-0 with Doubleheader Win
January 13, 2018 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee men's tennis team opened the season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Charlotte at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The Vols (2-0) beat Charlotte (0-2) 6-1 in the first match and 7-0 in the second in Chris Woodruff's first dual matches as Tennessee's head coach.
The freshman trio of Nicaise Muamba, Adam Walton and Andrew Rogers earned victories for the Vols in their dual match debuts. Walton went a combined 4-0, winning both singles matches on court 4 and two doubles matches at the top of the lineup with redshirt junior Preston Touliatos.
Muamba is the newest Vol on campus, having arrived just last week from Laval, Quebec. The Canadian junior national champion won both his matches at the No. 3 position.
The Vols dropped the doubles point in the first match but rolled back to win all six singles matches. Tennessee recorded the full shutout in the second match, not dropping a single set.
Like Walton, Touliatos also put together a combined 4-0 start to the spring while playing No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. It was his first dual match play since April 2016, having missed last season with shoulder surgery.
NEXT UP: The Vols play another doubleheader Monday, taking on Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. and Belmont at 2 p.m. at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Admission is free.
NOTES: Timo Stodder is now a team-leading 14-4 this season, starting his second year at the No. 1 position ... Adam Walton passed the 10-win milestone in both singles (10-5) and doubles (10-3) ... Four Vols have at least 10 wins this season: Stodder (14), Scott Jones (10), Walton (10) and Luca Wiedenmann (10).
QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Woodruff:
"It's a process right now. We have a young team. We had three guys out there who'd never played a dual match and another guy who's missed the last year to shoulder surgery. We played better in second match; we won in around 30 to 35 minutes less than the first. I thought Charlotte played really well at certain spots.
"This is probably the only sport where you don't see your team in a month and you have five days to prepare for a season. It's really tough. I can't think of many sports where that's the case. In the last week of practice, we've focused on doing the right things. Everyone knows we won't go through the season without a few blemishes and adversity. We have a few guys who are banged up a little to start the season. We just have to put our heads down and go to work and see where we can improve."
