KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Erica Treiber and Alyssa Andreno each recorded double-digit kills and hit better than .500 to guide Tennessee past USC Upstate 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 24-26, 26-16) on Saturday as part of the Rocky Top Invitational at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Treiber went the entire match without an error in 19 attacks, racking up 12 kills for Tennessee (6-2), while fellow middle hitter Andreno had 13 kills on 22 attacks. Sedona Hansen made her presence known as she recorded her third double-double of the season with 29 assists and 13 digs.
The Vols took the opening set 25-12 behind the hot hands of Kendra Turner, who had four kills, and defensively they were anchored by Stephanie Spencer and Hansen, who had four digs each.
Tennessee started strong in the second set with USC Upstate (3-9) trying to make a run and make it a tight set, but eventually UT overcame and won the set 25-17. Andreno stepped up in the second set to lead the team with five kills, while Kanisha Jimenez and Tessa Grubbs both had four kills.
The Lady Vols dropped the third set 26-24 as the Spartans came out strong and never let up. Andreno continued to make her presence felt with four kills in the set. Lily Dempsey led the Spartans with five kills in the set.
In the fourth set, UT started fast and never looked back. They opened the set on a 9-0 run as they cruised to a 25-16 win in the final set.
Gloria Ikenegbu led the Spartans with a team-high 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .429 and defensively Kaleigh Kelley paved the way with 19 digs.
Tennessee closes out the Rocky Top Invitational tonight at 7 p.m. against Furman University.
