September 10, 2017 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Volunteers (8-0) posted a 3-1 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-1-1) on Sunday, before a crowd of 1,004, at Regal Soccer Stadium.
The win gives Tennessee their best start in program history at 8-0, concluding non-conference play for the 2017 regular season. The Vols are just one win away from their longest win streak in program history (2004).
The Volunteers started off quickly with a goal in the second minute of the first half on a header from sophomore Mary Alice Vignola, off assists from Khadija Shaw and Anna Bialczak. It was Vignola's first start of the season at forward after beginning the year on defense.
Redshirt sophomore Katie Cousins added to the Volunteers' lead with a goal off rebound at the 34th minute mark to give Tennessee a 2-0 lead heading into the break. The rebound goal came off two shots on-goal by Shaw, which bounced off the post and cross bar, respectively.
Virginia Tech closed the lead to 2-1 in the second half, but the Vols added insurance late. Redshirt junior Meghan Flynn added her second goal of the season on a through ball from Salera Jordan in the 82nd minute of the match. Maya Neal cleared the ball to Jordan on the play.
Virginia Tech got on the scoreboard with a goal from Allyson Brown in the 53rd minute, off a header from Jordan Hemmen. This goal ended Tennessee's 486 minute steak of no goals allowed. Prior to the contest against Virginia Tech, the Volunteers recorded six shutouts in seven games on the 2017 campaign, which is one shy of last year's total for the season.
SMOKEY GREYS: The Tennessee Volunteers debuted some fresh, new uniforms for the match against Virginia Tech. With the win, Tennessee moves to 1-0 in its "Smokey Grey" uniforms.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will begin Southeastern Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 17, versus the University of Kentucky at Regal Soccer Stadium. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start time. It will be televised on ESPNU, making it the second consecutive national television appearance for the Volunteers.
