MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Brooke Schumacher, senior Kendra Turner and sophomore Breana Jeter all had record-setting performances in a 3-1 win over the University of Texas San Antonio on Friday in the opening match of the Diet Coke Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion.
Schumacher finished the match with 36 digs, which is a career-high and makes her the program's all-time digs leader in four-set matches. It also makes her tied for fourth all-time in digs. Turner tied her career high with 52 attacks, and 17 of those were kills.
Jeter recorded a career high in total attacks with 29 and kills with 14 in the win for the Volunteers, who improved to 4-0 on the season. Jeter also finished with a match-high hitting percentage of .345.
"I'm very excited and proud of the way that Schumacher has been playing since the third of last season and just picked up right away from that this season," head coach Rob Patrick said. "I think that she is one of the top liberos in the country and definitely in the SEC and she showed it tonight by over and over keeping plays alive against two great hitters who put a lot of heat on the ball for UTSA.
"Kudos to Jeter and Turner. They came in and performed at a really high consistent level in attacking the ball and did a great job of taking care of out of system balls and in system balls."
Sophomore Sedona Hansen recorded her second double-double of the season with 26 assists and 10 digs.
Tennessee started out hot and took the opening set 25-18, but the Roadrunners made the second set a little more challenging. Still, the Vols showed poise and closed out the set by winning the final three points.
"That was a really good win today," Patrick said. "I was very proud of all of our players for being able to come up here and play at a pretty consistent level for four sets. When UTSA made the match tight, I thought that we stepped up and were able to battle with them and I and I was very proud of that."
The Roadrunners (0-4) took a tight third set, but UT rallied back to win the fourth set to take the match.
Texas San Antonio was led by Brianna McCulloch, who had 21 kills on 55 attacks for the Roadrunners and a .255 hitting percentage. Amanda Gonzales had 48 assists for UTSA, while Marijeta Runjic was also over 50 attacks with 59 and 15 kills. She recorded a double-double with those 15 kills and the 13 blocks.
