Williams Records Double-Double Against West Virginia

MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Callie Williams recorded her first career double-double in a hard-fought 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 22-25) loss to the Mountaineers of West Virginia in the second match of the Diet Coke Classic hosted by University of Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday.
Williams finished the match with 13 assists and 10 digs. Those 13 assists marked her fifth consecutive match with double-digit assists.
This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Tennessee just could not get into its normal rhythm early in the match. The Vols dropped the opening set 25-20, but it was not easy for West Virginia as they fought back late after being down 21-13.
Kendra Turner guided the Vols in the opening set with four of her eight kills and a hitting percentage of .222.
The Vols never looked comfortable in the match and scored just 16 points in the second set behind the combo of Erica Treiber and Breana Jeter, who had two kills each in the set.
Tennessee finished the match with 106 attacks, led by Turner who had the eight kills. Treiber had a .333 hitting percentage with seven kills and just one error.
Sedona Hansen also continued her streak of double-digit assists with 14 in the match.
Payton Caffrey carried the Mountaineers with a .267 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 30 attacks. As a team, West Virginia finished with a hitting percentage of .235, committing just 17 errors.
Tennessee will face No. 2 Minnesota at 8 p.m. in the final match of the 2017 Diet Coke Classic hosted by Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion.
