KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 400th career win on Saturday as Tennessee defeated George Washington 3-1 (25-20, 25-9, 25-22) at Thompson-Boling Arena to close out the Tennessee Classic.
With the win, the Vols went 3-0 over the weekend and claimed the 2017 Tennessee Classic behind the efforts of tournament MVP Alyssa Andreno, who had 16 kills and 15 blocks for the weekend. Also making the All-Tournament Team was Erica Treiber, who closed out the week with 22 kills, nine blocks, four aces and a .543 hitting percentage.
Brooke Schumacher joined Andreno and Treiber on the team; she came up big this weekend by keeping points alive with her 36 digs.
"I was very happy with the way we came out today in both matches," Patrick said. "We have been a slow starting team over the last couple of years. and that is something that we have really worked with our team and they have took it upon themselves to start out matches better."
The opening set was back-and-forth, but Tennessee escaped with the 25-20 win behind a block by Treiber and Stephanie Spencer and then a kill by Andreno.
The Volunteers played flawless in the second set, taking it 25-9 but George Washington kept things close in the third set. Still, Tennessee proved to be a little too much by playing error-free volleyball.
"I thought the team did a really good job today of being really focused and playing technically well," Patrick said. "Tonight's match I thought we played by having minimal errors and really made it hard on George Washington to get in a rhythm because we were just not giving them any points."
Senior Kendra Turner lead Tennessee with 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage, but Andreno, who played error-free volleyball, had eight kills on 16 total attacks for a .500 percentage on the night.
George Washington was led by Alexis Lete, who finished with a .333 hitting percentage and had just five kills on 12 total attacks.
Tennessee will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take part in the 2017 Diet Coke Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota, facing Texas San Antonio in the opening match on Friday.
