Flynn Lifts Vols to 1-0 Win over George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. — Playing practically a hometown game, junior forward Meghan Flynn scored a game winner to lift Tennessee to a 1-0 win over George Mason on Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
From nearby Arlington, Virginia, Flynn had plenty of family and friends cheering her on as she took advantage of a late-game opportunity. Taking a pass from freshman McKinley Burkett, she dribbled down the left side and scored into the top right corner in the 82nd minute.
With the 1-0 win over Navy on Friday, the Vols are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2012.
Junior goalkeeper Shae Yanez and the Tennessee defense posted the second shutout to start the season. Yanez collected five saves, four in the second half.
Tennessee stepped up its offensive pressure in the second half with 14 shots, including seven on goal. Flynn and juniors Danielle Marcano and Khadija Shaw had two shots on goal each in the game.
The Vols outshot George Mason narrowly in the first half 6 to 5. Tennessee's best chance came late when Shaw struck a ball to Patriot keeper Morgan Symmers with less than a minute left.
For the game, Tennessee out-shot George Mason 20 to 13.
Tennessee opens the home schedule next week, hosting ETSU on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Charleston on Sunday at 1 p.m.

- Meghan Flynn wasn't the only Vol with Virginia ties. The Vols have six Virginia natives on the roster: McKinley Burkett (Moseley, Va.), Katie Cousins (Forest, Va.), Meghan Flynn (Arlington, Va.), sisters Clair and Paige Franks (Richmond, Va.) and Kelsey Kiley (Centreville, Va.).
- Sunday marked the first meeting between Tennessee and George Mason since 2000.
- Junior defender Danielle Marcano celebrated her birthday Sunday.
- Flynn now has five career goals and Sunday's was her first of the season. She scored two goals in each of her first two years.
