Sandgren Cracks Top 100 of ATP Rankings
June 11, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Former Tennessee standout Tennys Sandgren broke into the top-100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings in Sunday's update after a semifinal appearance in the Prostejov Challenger in the Czech Republic.
Sandgren is the newest member of the top 100, coming in at exactly No. 100 after rising 13 spots.
A native of Gallatin, Tennessee, Sandgren became the sixth Vol in program history to reach the top 100 of the world tour singles rankings, joining head coach Chris Woodruff, Paul Annacone, Mel Purcell, Mike DePalmer Jr. and Rodney Harmon.
In total, 14 Vols have now reached either the singles or doubles top 100. Former Tennessee All-American and current professional John-Patrick Smith has spent considerable time in the top 100 of doubles.
Sandgren has steadily climbed the rankings since February when he was ranked No. 198. In that time, he won a pair of ATP Challenger titles, made his ATP Tour-level debut at the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Houston and won the USTA's French Open wild card. He lost in the first round at Roland Garros but cruised into the semifinals at the Prostejov Challenger the next week. Much of his progress has happened on clay.
