Vols Fall to Vanderbilt, 1-0
April 28, 2017 | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee scattered five hits against the Commodores on Friday night, but struggled to push a run across as the Volunteers dropped the series opener to Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field, 1-0.
With the loss, Tennessee moves to 21-18 (5-14 SEC) while Vanderbilt is now 26-16 (10-9 SEC) on the year.
After three scoreless innings to start the contest, the Commodores plated a run as Jeren Kendall homered to left field to put Vandy up, 1-0, in the fourth.
Tennessee threatened in the fifth as shortstop Max Bartlett sent a two-out double to left field, but a strikeout ended the inning in the next at-bat.
The Vols put runners in scoring position again in the sixth as senior Jeff Moberg led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Justin Ammons then reached base via a walk before Luc Lipcius groundout to short, advancing the runners to second and third base, respectively. The inning ended on a fly ball to center before UT could scratch a run across.
Vanderbilt's 1-0 lead held through the ninth as neither team put a run on the board in the final four innings.
In his 11th start of the year, Martin (4-5) dealt his third complete effort in as many games (also, vs. Auburn and at Texas A&M). The righty allowed one run on four hits and fanned eight of his 31 batters faced in the loss.
Martin is the first Volunteer pitcher to record multiple complete games in a single season since Zack Godley (6) did so in 2013.
