KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 19/19 Tennessee defeated NC State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium to complete the series sweep over the Wolfpack and extend its winning streak to 10 games.
CJ McClain had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI singles. McClain's single in the bottom of the fourth broke a 1-1 tie and turned out to be the game-winning hit for UT. The Nashville native's three hits on the afternoon tied a career high.
Freshman Caylan Arnold earned the win for the Vols to improve her record to 14-4 this season. The Maryville native recorded six strikeouts and gave up just three hits over six innings of scoreless relief.
The Big Orange opened the scoring on an RBI single by Meghan Gregg in the bottom of the first inning. Aubrey Leach singled to start the frame and came around to score on Gregg's base hit to centerfield. With the hit, Gregg extended her NCAA-leading RBI total to 51 for the season.
Natalie Jones scored on a passed ball in the top of the second to tie the game at one. That would turn out to be the only run of the game for the Wolfpack.
Tennessee (31-5) gained the momentum in the fourth inning when Chelsea Seggern drove a ball to the wall in left center for a double and scored on McClain's single to left field. Leach followed with a single of her own to score the speedy McClain from second and make it 3-1.
The Vols broke the game open in the fifth inning thanks to a pair of big hits by Megan Geer and McClain. Following a walk by Gregg, Geer smashed a 1-2 pitch over the wall in center for her fifth home run of the year, extending the lead to four. Another RBI-single by McClain later in the inning accounted for the game's final run.
Peyton Silverman took the loss for NC State (12-24), giving up all six runs on nine hits while walking three batters. Tyler Ross and Jessica Moore led the Wolfpack offensively with two hits apiece.
