Chiles Joins Softball Staff as Volunteer Assistant Coach
December 11, 2017 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee softball co-head coaches Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly have announced the addition of VFL India Chiles to their staff for the 2018 season.
Â
Chiles, a former All-American for the Lady Vols (2004-07), will join the softball staff as the volunteer assistant coach working primary with the slappers and outfielders. She joins the staff after working as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Johnson & Johnson. She is the current owner and operator of SlapperNation LLC.
Â
"Ralph and I are extremely happy to have India joining our coaching staff," said Karen Weekly. "India checks all of the boxes from a softball perspective, as she was an outstanding player for the Lady Vols and is one of the best short game clinicians and instructors in the country."
Â
As a player, Chiles helped Tennessee reached the Women's College World Series three times (2005, 2006 and 2007) and the NCAA Tournament four times from 2004-07. The Lady Vols also made the WCWS Championship game in 2007 and finished the season as national runners-up. Chiles has been regarded as one of the best slappers in the game and for her efforts was named SEC Player of the Year in 2007. The Louisville, Ky., native started 176 games over her four seasons, while recording 204 hits and scoring 157 runs.
Â
Her senior season was her most impressive season (2007) in which she finished with a .459 batting average with 57 runs, 89 hits, 44 stolen bases, an on-base percentage of .502 and a slugging percentage of .500. For her efforts, Chiles earned SEC Player of the Year, Louisville/NFCA First-Team All-American, WCWS All-Tournament Team and All-SEC Tournament Team honors. She was also invited to the USA Softball Team Selection Camp and was drafted by the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch in 2007. Â
Â
Chiles was also a great student in the classroom while on Rocky Top, having been named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, SEC Spring Honor Roll (2006, 2007, 2008), and Academic All-SEC (2004 & 2008) honoree.
Â
Chiles will take over for Madison Shipman, who was the Lady Vols' volunteer assistant coach the past two seasons.Â
Â
"For the past several years she has been a top performer in pharmaceutical sales, and you can't put a price on the experience she brings from the competitive corporate arena," stated Weekly. "She is a passionate teacher, motivator and leader and will make an immediate impact on our players and program."
