Cousins Named Soccer All-America
November 30, 2017 | Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo.  — Tennessee redshirt sophomore midfielder Katie Cousins was named to the third-team United Soccer Coaches All-American Team, the national coaches association announced Thursday.Â
A native of Forest, Virginia, Cousins was one of 41 players to earn All-America honors. She is the first Tennessee student-athlete to be named a United Coaches All-American since Hannah Wilkinson in 2012 and the fifth player in program history to earn the organization's All-America honors.Â
This year's NCAA Division I All-Americans will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Luncheon on January 20, 2018, in conjunction with the organization's national convention in downtown Philadelphia.
"We couldn't be happier for Katie to receive this honor," Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said. "There's no doubt that she is one of the top midfielders in the country, and deserving of All America recognition. Anyone who watches Katie play can see how unique her skill-set is. Katie has worked hard to continue to develop her game and take great pride in her defending. She has become a true two-way player."
Cousins made her return to college competition this season after competed with Team USA at the FIFA U20 World Cup last year. She started all 21 games for the Vols this season and anchored the middle of the field for the Vols. She also contributed two goals and four assists, good for eight points.
Tennessee finished the year 15-4-2, making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2012 and advancing to the second round. The Lady Vols scored 47 goals, the third most in program history, and also posted 10 shutouts.
Three Vols joined Cousins on the United Coaches All-Southeast Region team announced earlier this week: forward Khadija Shaw (first team), defender Maya Neal (second team) and midfielder Rylie O'Keefe (third team).Â
