#21 Vols Rally to Beat Missouri in Overtime, 3-2
October 08, 2017 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Tennessee junior Khadija Shaw scored off a free kick in overtime to help No. 21 Tennessee complete a 3-2 rally victory over Missouri at Mizzou Soccer Stadium.
The Vols (12-1-1, 4-1-1 SEC) trailed most of the game but tied Missouri (5-9-1, 1-5-0) on a rebound putback by redshirt freshman Erin Gilroy with four minutes left in regulation.Â
Mary Alice Vignola also added a goal, her third of the season, as the Lady Vols ran their winning streak to three games.
"Terrific resolve from a terrific team," Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said. "We came from behind twice today, which says everything about the character of our group. That is the first time we've been tested in that way all season. Good teams must go through experiences like these at some point in a season. Thankfully we have amazing resolve, and kids who can make plays that matter.
"Bunny and Rylie (O'Keefe) had a fantastic give and go that sprung Bunny in for her serve to Anna, which eventually Gilroy finished. And then Bunny's game-winning free kick was just class. Big time players step up in big time moments, and that was the difference today."
Missouri struck first with a goal by Sarah Luebbert off passes from Jessica Johnson and Kaitlyn Clark in the 25th minute. It was just the second time this season the Vols have trailed at any point in regulation play this season.Â
Tennessee out-shot Missouri 14 to 7 in the first half with three shots on goal. Senior Ariel Kupritz had four shots in 11 minutes off the bench.Â
The Vols came out in the second half and equalized the game when Vignola drove most of Missouri's half, evading defenders before putting in the goal off her left foot in the 55th minute.Â
Two minutes later, the Tigers retook the lead. Luebbert scored her second goal of the game, this time off a penalty kick.Â
Running out of time, Tennessee struck back with four minutes left in regulation. Junior Anna Bialczak beamed in a shot to Missouri goalkeeper Rivers, who blocked the ball back into play. Gilroy followed the rebound in for her second goal of the season to tie the game.Â
Shaw provided the game winner in the fourth minute of overtime, scoring on a direct kick outside the box. She now has a team-leading 11 goals this season. Â
The Lady Vols return to competition with a Friday home game against Georgia at 7 p.m.
