OKLAHOMA CITY - USA Softball recently announced the list of athletes invited to participate at the 2018 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp to be held Jan. 1-5, 2018, at Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Florida. Tennessee legend Monica Abbott and current Lady Vols standout Meghan Gregg are among those who have accepted the invitation to try out for a spot on the 2018 USA Softball WNT roster.
Â
Abbott, who will be inducted in the Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame this Friday, stands among the greatest players in the history of women's fastpitch softball. She arrived at Tennessee in 2004 from Salinas, California, and during her time on Rocky Top rewrote the SEC and NCAA pitching records book.
Â
Abbot was the 2007 USA Softball Player of the Year, the 2007 Honda Award winner for softball, a three-time SEC Player of the Year, a four-time All-American and the 2004 SEC Rookie of the Year. She currently holds the NCAA Division I record for career victories (189), career shutouts (112), career strikeouts (2,440), career appearances (253) and the single-season record for strikeouts with 724 in 2007.
Â
Gregg, the 2017 SEC Player of the Year, is a rising senior with the Lady Vols. Gregg came to Knoxville from Williamson, Georgia, where she attended Flint River Academy. In 2017, Gregg set UT's single-season RBI record with 79, while also being named to the NFCA Division I All-Southeast Region Team, the NFCA Division I All-America Team. She also earned first-team All-SEC honors, SEC All-Defensive Team acclaim, and College Sports Madness Preseason All-American honors.
Â
Gregg currently ranks fourth in the program with 39 career home runs, seventh in RBIs with 191, ninth in batting average at .374, fourth in on-base percentage (.478), first in slugging percentage (.695) and seventh in career doubles (48).
Â
A total of 61 athletes were invited to attend the Selection Camp, with 56 athletes accepting the invitation.Â
Â
Those athletes who accepted the invitation to try out will vie for a spot on the 2018 USA Softball Women's National Team (WNT) roster, which will compete at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's World Championship in Chiba, Japan, Aug. 2-12, 2018, the World Cup of Softball XIII and select invitational events.
Â
During the selection process, athletes will participate in position drills, as well as simulated games, and will be evaluated by the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Committee (WNTSC). The 2018 USA Softball WNT will look to defend its gold medal from the 2016 WBSC Women's World Championship, where the team claimed the 10th overall World Championship title for the WNT program.
Â
The team finished the 2016 WBSC World Championship with a .436 team batting average, 19 home runs, 80 RBIs and they outscored opponents 83-10. The pitching staff was lights out, allowing just eight earned runs for a 1.19 ERA.
