BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Tennessee track & field team will open up the 2017 calendar year at the same place the 2016 one ended, Gladstein Fieldhouse. Tennessee will take on Indiana in the Indiana-Tennessee Dual on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
The two teams will renew a rivalry that dates back to 1978 as the two squads will compete for the 22nd time. The men's squads matched up 18 times in the 1980's and 90's. Last year, the two schools renewed the rivalry that hadn't occurred since 1999. The UT men hold a 14-7 advantage while the Tennessee women hold a 9-2-1 edge in 12 all-time meetings.
"We are excited to continue this dual meet tradition," director of track & field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "This has been going on through the years and many of our alums have had the honor and the privilege to compete in this early season dual meet. We are thrilled to have a shot at the 10th dual meet win for the women and the 15th win for the men."
The squads will compete in 16 track events and 12 field events split evenly between the men's and women's squads. The meet will start with the with four women's events beginning simultaneously: long jump, pole vault, weight throw and the 60m hurdles. The dual meet will be scored with five points awarded to each individual that finishes in first, three points to the second place finisher and one point for the third place finisher. The top relay team will earn five points, with no points awarded for second place.
"Indiana gave us a great challenge last year," Alford-Sullivan said. "We look to come in and get the competitive juices going early in the season. The squads had a great week of preparation; we had a very good end to the fall semester in December and then we came back early and have had a great week of preparation. We are thrilled to get this 2017 drive started."
Last Year's Dual Meet
Last year featured a tight competition as the Tennessee women and the Indiana women tied at 61-61 while the UT men fell to the Hoosiers, 66-47.
The men posted seven wins, including a sweep of the sprinting events as Christian Coleman won the 60m and 200m dashes, setting a facility record of 21.04 in the 200m race. Nathan Strother clocked a time of 47.57 to win the 400m. The two teamed with Ari Cogdell and Darryl Harris to set a meet-record of 3:12.31 in the 4x400m relay.
The women's squad posted seven wins as well led by Cidae'a Woods who had two first-place showings and two second place showings. She won the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.90 and the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters. Woods was second in the high jump (1.69 meters) and second in the triple jump (12.20 meters).
Last Time Out
Tennessee claimed nine top-three finishes and two victories as UT opened the indoor season at the Hoosier Open, hosted by Indiana.
Coleman (33.26) and Strother (33.64) finished first and second in the 300m race as Coleman set a Gladstein Fieldhouse facility record. Those were also the fourth and eighth fastest 300m times in school history as each of them bettered their mark from last year's competition. Coleman will compete in the 200m race, while Strother will be in the 200m and 400m competitions. Both will compete on the 4x400m relay team.
Freshman Darryl Sullivan claimed the high jump victory at the Hoosier Open with a mark of 2.11m (6-11) as he cleared the distance on his first attempt to claim the Vols' second victory of the evening. Sullivan will compete in the high jump and long jump this weekend.
Seth Whitener earned a spot on the Vols' all-time top 10 list as he posted a 35-lb weight throw of 19.08m (62-7.25) on Friday. That tied Whitener for 10th on the list with Deon McAdoo.
On the women's side, Lenysse Dyer helped lead the Vols at the 300m distance. Dyer took second in 38.48. Dyer will compete in the 400m and with the 4x400m relay team on Saturday.
Three Vols competed in the women's weight throw and all three set personal records. Stamatia Scarvelis topped the Vols' contingent with a fourth place finish tossing the 20-lb weight 18.89 meters (61-11.75). That was good for the fourth best weight throw in school history. Savannah Marlow was not far behind as the sophomore tallied a mark of 17.70 meters (58-1), bettering her personal best and taking sixth in the competition and eighth on the school's all-time leaderboard. Candice Butler rounded out the group with a seventh place finish.
