OXFORD, Miss. --The Volunteers blasted their way to a 7-2 comeback victory over Ole Miss in Friday night's series opener in Oxford, Miss., extending their win streak over the Rebels to 15 straight games.
No. 10/9 Tennessee hit a program-record four home runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and improve to 39-12 overall and 15-6 in SEC play. The win, combined with an Auburn loss to Texas A&M, moved the Vols into a tie for second place in the conference standings.
Matty Moss continued her string of stellar pitching performances to earn her 11th win of the year and sixth in SEC play. The freshman from Greenville, S.C., threw a career-high seven innings while only giving up a pair of unearned runs in a complete-game effort.
Lexi Overstreet and Megan Geer led the offensive charge for the Big Orange. Overstreet got the Vols on the board with an RBI double in the fifth inning and hit her team-leading 12th homer of the year in the seventh. Geer led the team with three hits and two runs on the night. She also hit a solo home run in UT's five-run seventh inning.
Despite the final margin of victory, Tennessee trailed for much of the game after Ole Miss (37-18, 10-12 SEC) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. A defensive miscue by the Vols proved costly as an error extended the inning and allowed the Rebels to take a two-run lead. Grayce Majam reached on the error with two outs to load the bases and Elantra Cox made UT pay with a single to left field to plate a pair of runs.
After leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings, Tennessee finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Geer started a two-out rally with an infield single and scored on a double to the right-center field gap by Overstreet to cut the deficit to one.
The Big Orange used that momentum to tie the game one inning later.Gretchen Aucoin reached on an error to lead off the inning before being pinch run for by CJ McClain. A groundout by Shaliyah Geathers moved McClain to second, and Scarlet McSwain came through with a clutch single to tie the game at two.
The Tennessee offense absolutely exploded in the top of the seventh, hitting a program-record four home runs in the frame, including three in a row to open the inning. The Vols took their first lead of the game on Gregg's leadoff blast over the left-field wall and continued to pour it on from there. Geer and Overstreet followed Gregg's homer with solo blasts of their own before Geathers capped off the scoring with a monster two-run shot into the parking lot beyond center field to put UT up 7-2.
Elisha Jahnke was stuck with the loss and fell to 10-7 on the year for the Rebels after giving up three runs in six innings of work.
The Vols will try to win the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on the SEC Network and fans can also listen live on WNML AM 990.
