April 15, 2016 | Softball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee senior catcher Lexi Overstreet became the 13th player in program history to be selected in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Draft after being picked by the Houston Scrap Yard Dawgs in the third round with the 19th overall pick last night at the CMA Theater inside the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
"I was very excited and honored to be given this opportunity to continue to play softball with the Scrap Yard Dawgs," Overstreet said.
Overstreet is the first Vol to be drafted since former All-American and current volunteer assistant coach Madison Shipman was chosen No. 2 overall by the USSSA Pride in 2014. Shipman and Overstreet were teammates at UT for two seasons and will have the chance to play together once again as Shipman was traded to the Scrap Yard Dawgs earlier this month.
The 2016 season will be the first for the Scrap Yard Dawgs after being added to the NPF as an expansion team in October of 2015. The team is based out of The Woodlands, Texas, which is located just north of Houston and will begin its 2016 season on June 2 against the Chicago Bandits. View the entire 2016 schedule HERE.
Overstreet has been a consistent contributor for the Volunteers since her freshman year in 2013 and is having a breakout senior season. The Suwanee, Ga., native has already set career-highs with 38 runs, 40 hits, nine home runs and 45 RBIs in just 41 games this season. With her last home run she also moved into 10th all-time on the Tennessee career home runs list with 26.
Before embarking on her professional career, Overstreet will try and help lead Tennessee back to the Women's College World Series for the second straight season and the third time in the past four years.
