Men's Tennis Loses to Arkansas, 5-2

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After dropping a close match point, the Tennessee Volunteers could not completely turn the tide in a 5-2 loss to No. 26 Arkansas on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (6-6, 2-2 SEC) had three match points in doubles at the top of the lineup but did not convert. Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski could not serve it out at 5-4, 40-15, and eventually lost in the doubles decider 7-5 as Arkansas (11-3, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, it was a close race to the finish as Tennessee and Arkansas each won three opening sets. Arkansas got straight-set wins on court 6 from William Albanese and court 1 from Mike Redlicki to go up 3-0.
Tennessee was up a set and deep into the second set on three of the four remaining courts when the Razorbacks clinched the match at 4-0. After losing the first set, Schipanski saved a pair of match points to tie the second set at 5-5 but Santiago Munoz won the last two games to clinch the team victory on court 3, 6-3, 7-5.
"We needed to take one of those match points in doubles to put us 1-0 up, and we'd probably win this match," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "Then we've got young guys who are good enough to win in this league, but they're not yet. We've got to turnaround tomorrow and start up again."
Two newcomers delivered singles points for Tennessee after the match was decided. Sophomore Preston Touliatos won his first career SEC match, beating Adam Sanjurjo 6-4, 7-5 on court 5. Freshman Srdjan Jakovljevic finished his weekend 2-0 in singles with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Giammarco Micolani on court 4.
