February 27, 2016 | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Tennessee lefty Zach Warren held Saint Mary's College to just three hits in his start on Saturday, as the Volunteers captured a 6-3 victory over the Gaels in Game Two of the Grand Canyon Classic at Brazell Stadium.
Warren (2-0) set the tone early for Tennessee and threw 6.0 scoreless innings while facing the minimum through the first three frames. He allowed just three hits in the outing, while establishing a new single-game high of seven strikeouts against the Gaels.
The Vols' offense got a jump on Saint Mary's in the first, as senior Jeff Moberg (4-for-4) led off with a stand-up double to straight-away center. An RBI-double by Jordan Rodgers (1-for-3, 2 RBI) put UT on the boards before catcher Tyler Schultz (1-for-4, RBI) drove a ball through the left side, scoring Vincent Jackson (0-for-1) from third to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, UT pushed two more runs across to further their lead to 4-0. Moberg and right fielder Chris Hall (3-for-4, RBI) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners for a Nick Senzel (1-for-4, RBI) RBI-single. Rodgers then hit a high fly ball to center field, creating an opportunity for Hall to score from third.
Shortstop Max Bartlett (1-for-4) then set the Vols up for another big inning in the eighth with a double down the right field line. With bases loaded and one out, seniors Derek Lance (1-for-4, RBI) and Hall then drove two more runs across to give UT a 6-2 advantage.
In relief, righ-handed freshman Will Neely threw 1.2 innings before Tennessee went to closer Jon Lipinski in the eighth. In his second appearance of the season, Lipinski worked 1.1 innings and picked up the save, also his second of the year.
