Bats Come Alive in 9-2 Win over SJSU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 8/9 Tennessee bounced back from a pair of loss on Friday with a convincing 9-2 victory over San Jose State on a hot Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
A trio of Vols recorded multi-RBI efforts, led by Rainey Gaffin's 3-for-3 performance. Meghan Gregg also had a great day at the plate, reaching base in all five of her at-bats, going 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs.
The Big Orange raced out to an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. CJ McClain drove in a run on an RBI fielder's choice and Brooke Vines followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Vols tacked on another run in the top of the third inning courtesy of an RBI double by Gaffin. Gregg scored on the play after leading off the inning with inning with a single.
Tennessee added to its lead yet again with two more runs in the fifth, and again it was Gaffin coming up with a big hit. The senior from Thornton, Colo., recorded her third hit of the afternoon as she ripped a single up the middle to score Gregg. The Vols went on to load the bases and Gretchen Aucoin drew a walk to account for the other run in the inning, spotting UT a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans broke the shutout with a 2-run homer by Brittany Abacherli in the bottom of the fifth inning but that would be all they would muster the rest of the way.
UT quickly responded with four runs in the top of the sixth thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from senior Lexi Overstreet and freshman Logyn Lilley to increase the lead to 9-2.
Freshman pitcher Matty Moss earned her first-career victory, striking out five in 6.1 innings of work.
The Volunteers finish up play at the Kajikawa Classic with a showdown against Northwestern that is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 p.m. ET. Listen live on UTSports.com.
