OKLAHOMA CITY -- Three current or former Tennessee players have been selected to attend the 2017 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp, which will be held Jan. 1-5 at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Current starting shortstop Meghan Gregg and former All-Americans Madison Shipman and Raven Chavanne were among 43 initial invitees that will be vying for 17 spots on the 2017 women's national team that will compete in the Pan American Games/World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Championship Qualifier in Florida, among other events that will be announced at a later date.
WNT Selection Camp attendees will participate in a five-day selection camp, where they will compete in position drills and simulated games while being evaluated by members of the Women's National Team Selection Committee (WNTSC).
After earning SEC All-Freshmen Team honors in 2015, Gregg posted another stellar season last year, leading the Vols with a .383 batting average while finishing second on the team with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs. She was an All-SEC first-team selection and named to the NFCA All-Southeast Region third team.
Shipman, UT's current volunteer assistant coach, just completed her third season in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league, helping the Houston Scrap Yard Dawgs reach the NPF Championship series in their inaugural season. The Valencia, Calif., native was a three-time All-American and won a handful of major awards during her senior season, including being named SEC Player of the Year. She also won the Honda Award for Softball and the Senior CLASS Award in 2014.
Chavanne is one of only two players in program history to earn All-America status four times, doing so from 2010-13. She is Tennessee's all-time leader in batting average (.442), runs (244), stolen bases (143) and on-base percentage (.508). She also ranks second all-time in hits with 355 during her incredible career. Chavanne garnered All-SEC honors four times as well and was a top three finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year award in 2013.
