KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 11 Tennessee could not rally back from an early deficit on Friday, falling to No. 1 LSU, 5-1, in the first game of this week's three-game series at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Tennessee (29-10, 7-6 SEC) scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning. LSU (37-4, 10-3 SEC) plated three in the first inning and two in the second.

Lexi Overstreet had an RBI double in the second inning. UT left eight runners on base.

UT starter Cheyanne Tarango (2-2) gave up five runs over 2.1 innings. Gretchen Aucoin threw 4.2 scoreless relief innings with two strikeouts.

LSU's Carley Hoover (11-2) earned the win after striking out 12 over seven frames with one run allowed.

Sahvannah Jaquish led the Tigers offensively, hitting two home runs and driving in four runs.

LSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Jaquish hit a one-out, three-run homer to left field off of Tarango.

Tennessee got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning when Overstreet hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Annie Aldrete.

The Tigers added two more runs off back-to-back homers in the top of the third. Jaquish hit a one-out home run to center field and Kloss followed with a solo blast to center off of Tarango.

The Lady Vols left runners on base in each of the final five innings.

Tennessee's best chance to add some more runs came in the fifth inning when Rainey Gaffin hit a leadoff single to third base and Megan Geer knocked a one-out single to right field. Hoover escaped the jam, striking out Meghan Gregg and getting Aucoin to fly out to left field.

Tennessee and LSU will play Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET with a live broadcast on ESPN. Beth Mowins will be the play-by-play announcer and Jessica Mendoza will be the analyst. WNML 990 AM and UTSports.com will carry a live audio broadcast with Brian Rice on the call. Tennessee men's basketball head coach Rick Barnes will throw out the first pitch.
