NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In the series opener of a three-game weekend series at No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt, the Tennessee Volunteers were defeated in a 9-0 decision on Friday night at Charles Hawkins Field.
With the loss, Tennessee falls to 10-12 on the season and 1-6 in SEC competition, while Vanderbilt (21-5) moves to 6-1 in conference play.
Volunteers starter Bret Marks (2-3) went 5.1 innings against Vanderbilt, allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out nine batters to receive the loss.
The Vols threatened in the first, as right fielder and leadoff man Vincent Jackson reached third via back-to-back throwing errors by Vanderbilt. But the Commodores' righthander Carson Fulmer recorded three straight strikeouts to strand Jackson at third.
After holding Vanderbilt hitless through three frames, Tennessee and Marks allowed the Commodores to put up four runs on four hits in the fourth. Vanderbilt came swinging again in the sixth, plating another four runs to give the 'Dores an 8-0 advantage.
"I just got done telling the team that through four innings, that was two really good Friday night guys," Head Coach Dave Serrano said. "They were both dueling each other. They were dueling each other's teams and they had their way with both teams. Those were two guys with a lot of winning experience and they proved tonight that they were the better team because they did the little things better than we did tonight."
Tennessee collected five hits in the contest, led by designated hitter Andrew Lee (2-for-4).
Righthander Peter Lenstrohm went to the mound for the Vols in the sixth and threw 1.2 innings of one-run relief before righty Quint Robinson made his collegiate debut for the Orange and White in relief. Robinson finished the game for UT, striking out two of his four batters faced.
