Aldrete Homers, #15 UT Tops TTU, 6-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Annie Aldrete hit a three-run homer and No. 15 Tennessee took a 6-1 win over Tennessee Tech on Wednesday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Tennessee (23-7) scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second. Tennessee Tech (17-13) scored its lone run in the first inning.
With the win, Tennessee extended its winning streak against in-state opponents to 83 straight. Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly have led UT to a perfect 78-0 record against in-state foes. The Lady Vols are 112-3 all-time against teams from the state of Tennessee.
Aldrete, who also drew a pair of walks, moved into a tie with Carrie Swinford (1996-99) for seventh place on UT's all-time home run list at 28 career blasts. She is two away from tying Melissa Davin (2011-14) and Adrianna Wilson (1999-2002) for fifth place (30 homers).
Meghan Gregg had a strong evening as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Megan Geer finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Cheyanne Tarango (1-1) earned the win after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with one strikeout. Gretchen Aucoin started the game and went 1.2 frames with one run allowed and one strikeout. Rainey Gaffin threw 2.2 scoreless relief frames and struck out three.
Hannah Weaver (6-6) took the loss after issuing six runs over 1.2 innings. Taylor Ketchum tossed 4.1 scoreless relief frames.
Tennessee Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Olivia Richards hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Angi Sakamoto from third base.
The Lady Vols answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. With two on and no outs, Gregg clubbed an RBI double off the wall in left field, plating Gaffin. Aldrete followed with a three-run homer over the scoreboard in left for her ninth blast on the year.
UT's lead grew to 6-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Gregg hit a two-out RBI triple to right center on the first pitch she saw from Weaver. Gregg then scored on a wild pitch by Ketchum during the following at-bat.
Tennessee hosts No. 7 Georgia for three games from March 28-30 at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Saturday's game will start at 3 p.m. and feature an SEC Network + online broadcast. Sunday's and Monday's games will be televised live on SEC Network at 7 p.m. ET.
