Pitt improved its all-time NCAA Tournament record to 6-3.
Saturday's win came in Suzie McConnell-Serio's first career NCAA Tournament game as a head coach.
The victory snapped Chattanooga's school-record 25-game win streak, which also was the third-longest active win streak in the NCAA.
Pitt is just the second team this season to defeat Chattanooga by 10 or more points, joining third-ranked Notre Dame.
The Panthers entered the tournament with field-goal defense of .362, and they held Chattanooga to .262 shooting Saturday. It was the 18th opponent this season that Pitt has held to fewer than 60 points. And it was their second time holding a team to 40 points or fewer this season.
With three blocks Saturday, Pitt forward Monica Wignot ascended into second place on Pitt's single-season blocks list, with 78 on the year. Wignot was a four-year member of the Panther's volleyball program before joining the basketball team as a graduate student this season.
Senior guard Brianna Kiesel scored 13 points Saturday to eclipse the 1,900-career point mark. The Utica, N.Y., native ranks fifth on Pitt's all-time scoring list with 1,906 points.
Freshman forward Stasha Carey logged her team-high seventh double-double of the season Saturday (and second in a row), totaling 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Chattanooga's three free throws attempted tied for 15th on the NCAA Tournament's all-time list of fewest free throws attempted in a first- and/or second-round game.
