Gaffin Leads #13 UT Past Dayton, 9-0 (5)

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Rainey Gaffin hit a grand slam, Annie Aldrete had a solo homer and Gretchen Aucoin tossed five shutout frames to lead No. 13 Tennessee to a 9-0 (5) win over Dayton on Friday at the KSU Classic at Bailey Park.
Tennessee (2-0) scored two in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and one in the fifth. Aucoin (1-0) struck out four and limited Dayton (0-1) to two hits.
Earlier on Friday, UT defeated Ohio, 5-0, in its season opener.
Gaffin finished 2-for-4 with the grand slam, five RBIs and one RBI double. She tallied two home runs and seven RBIs on the day. Aldrete went 2-for-3 with her first home run of the season. Geer was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Dayton's Kayla English (0-1) allowed eight runs (five earned) over 3.1 frames. Manda Cash allowed one unearned run over 1.2 relief frames.
Meghan Gregg made a big defensive play in the bottom of the first when Katie Ryan hit a two-out single to Gregg at short and the freshman made the heads-up play to throw the ball home to stop Tiffany Ricks from scoring.
Tennessee took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tory Lewis reached on an error at second base, scoring Lexi Overstreet and Gregg.
Geer hit a two-out single to center field to plate Hannah Devotie in the third inning and push the Lady Vols' lead to 3-0.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, Gaffin drilled a 1-1 pitch for grand slam over the wall in right field. It marked Tennessee's first grand slam since Madison Shipman hit one against South Carolina on March 21, 2014. Two batters later, Aldrete clubbed her first home run of the season, a solo blast to right field.
Gaffin added to her already-stellar day in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI double to left field that scored CJ McClain.
Tennessee next faces tournament host Kennesaw State on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. There will be a live audio broadcast on UTSports.com.
