TAMPA, Fla. -- Taylor Koenig and Megan Geer homered, Meghan Gregg hit a three-RBI triple and Erin Gabriel fanned eight over five scoreless frames to lead No. 11 Tennessee to a 14-0 (5) win over Detroit on Saturday at the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament.
Tennessee (8-0) scored four in the first inning, eight in the second and two in the third. Gabriel (3-0) limited Detroit (0-4) to just two hits.
Ten different Lady Vols recorded a hit in the game and Tennessee subbed several non-starters in following the big second inning. Gregg had a team-high three RBIs on a triple in the second inning. Shaliyah Geathers, Koenig and Geer had two RBIs apiece.
Gabriel threw just 67 pitches to earn the complete-game shutout, her second on the season and the fifth of her career.
Kat Hoffman (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) in one inning of work. Dayton Yingling gave up four unearned runs after tossing two-thirds of an inning. Hannah Leppek gave up two runs over 2.1 relief frames.
Tennessee wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. With one out in the first inning, Annie Aldrete hit an RBI bloop single to left field. Two batters later, Koenig crushed a two-out, two-run homer on top of the USF batting facility beyond the left field fence. Geer followed with a solo home run to right field to give UT a 4-0 lead.
In the second inning, Geathers hit a two-RBI single to left with the bases loaded to push Tennessee's lead to 6-0. After Yingling entered the circle, Geer drew a bases-loaded walk to plate CJ McClain. Gregg cleared the bases with her triple to center field off a 1-2 pitch. Lewis knocked an RBI single to right center and McClain connected on an RBI double to left center.
Haileigh Norris hit a leadoff single up the middle in the third inning and Scarlet McSwain brought her home with an RBI single to center field. Lauren Irwin smoked a double down the left field line and Gregg drew a walk to load the bases for Lexi Overstreet, who plated McSwain on an RBI groundout to second.
