AT FIRST GLANCE - THE OKLAHOMA GAME
- Saturday's game at Norman represents the first-ever regular season game between Tennessee and Oklahoma. Kickoff is slated for 8:14 PM EST/7:14 PM CST.
- Tennessee is 1-1 vs. Oklahoma all-time, including a 17-0 win in the 1939 Orange Bowl that sealed UT's 1938 national title season. The 1967 national champion Vols lost to OU in the 1968 Orange Bowl (Jan. 1, 1968), 26-24.
- The Vols are 9-6 all-time vs. the 10 current Big 12 schools, with the most recent matchup vs. Kansas State, a 35-21 loss in the 2001 Cotton Bowl. UT also defeated current SEC school/former Big 12 program Texas A&M 38-7 in the 2005 Cotton Bowl.
- UT is on the road vs. a Top 5 opponent for the first time since a loss at No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 26, 2013. The Vols' last win over a Top 5 team was a 30-27 win over No. 5 LSU in Baton Rouge (Sept. 26, 2005). UT's last win over any ranked foe was a 23-21 win over No. 11/9 South Carolina at home (Oct. 19, 2013).
LOOKING BACK AT: TENNESSEE 34, ARKANSAS STATE 19
- Tennessee won its 13th consecutive home game over a non-conference opponent with a 34-19 win over Arkansas State last Saturday at Neyland Stadium.
- Justin Worley threw two touchdowns to Marquez North and ran in a third score as UT moved to 2-0.
- Tennessee held Arkansas State to 4-for-17 on third down conversions. For the season, the UT defense is holding opponents to a 22.6% on third downs (7-for-31).
- The 22.6% defensive third down pct. ranks fourth in the SEC and 13th nationally in 2014.
22 TRUE FRESHMEN, 34 NEWCOMERS
- Tennessee has played 22 true freshmen this season, the most for any FBS program in the nation to date. UT played 21 true freshman in the win over Utah State, a school record for a season opener.
- Of the 71 players who played for UT vs. Utah State, 45 percent were playing in their first college game (32 total).
TURNOVER TICKER
- Tennessee has forced a turnover in eight of its last nine games and has forced multiple turnovers in eight of its last 14 under Butch Jones. The Vols are tied for third in the SEC with a +3 turnover margin, continuing a theme for Jones-coached teams over the last four years.
- Additionally, Jones-coached teams have scored 4.12 points per game more off turnovers than allowed since 2011 (scored 7.65/gm off turnovers while allowing 3.53), the 5th-best ratio for an FBS coach during that time frame.
FRESHMAN STARTERS
- The Vols started three true freshmen on offense and defense and one on special teams in their 2014 season opener vs. Utah State. Jashon Robertson at right guard, Derek Barnett at defensive end, Ethan Wolf at tight end and Aaron Medley at placekicker were the starters.
- The last time Tennessee started three true freshmen on offense and defense was in 2011 as current Vols Justin Coleman, A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt all started vs. Montana.
- Robertson became the fourth true freshman to start on the offensive line in a season opener in Tennessee history. The previous true freshmen starters on the line were: Bill Mayo (1981), Michael Munoz (2000) and Ja'Wuan James (2010).
- Wolf became the first true freshman to start at tight end since freshmen became eligible in 1972 in a season opener.
- Barnett was the first true freshman to start a season opener on the defensive line in history as well. In 1984, Darrin Miller started as a redshirt freshman at middle guard on the defensive line as the last freshman to draw a nod in an opener.
- Todd Kelly Jr. became the fifth different true freshman to start a game this season when he drew the nod at safety against Arkansas State in week two.
