Tennis Freshmen off to Winning Start

ATHENS, Ga. -- Tennessee's three freshmen won their collegiate debut matches Friday to open the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Newcomers Jess Jones, Luis Valero and Igor Smelyanski each won in straight sets to advance to the round of 32 in the first tournament of the college tennis season.
Jones collected the biggest win of the day, ousting 94th-ranked Alex Arovin of Tennessee Tech 6-1, 6-2 to collect a ranked victory to start his career. Valero defeated Johan den Toom of Arkansas 6-4, 6-2, and Smelyanski beat Florian Nicoud of Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-2.
In other Tennessee matches, junior Bartosz Sawicki lost to Vanderbilt's No. 3 player, Kris Yee, 7-5, 6-4. Senior Andrew Dromsky lost to Clemson's Austin Ansari 6-1, 6-0.
The first two rounds of doubles rounded out the day, resulting in a pair of Tennessee victories.
Valero scored a second win Friday against den Toom as he and Sawicki defeated the Arkansas pair of den Toom and Juan Marino 8-6. Dromsky and Smelyanski, seeded fifth, beat Winthrop's Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak 8-5.
Saturday's tournament schedule includes a round of doubles to start the morning at 8 a.m., followed by two rounds of singles throughout the day.
