Gibson Homers; USA Splits 2 Games

HAARLEM, Netherlands, -- Following a 30-hour delay due to rain, the USA Softball Women's National Team split its first day of games in the playoff portion of the ISF XIV World Championships, defeating Canada, 6-1, on Saturday morning before falling to Japan, 6-1, in the afternoon.
On Sunday, the U.S. plays either Australia or Canada at 5 a.m. ET. The winner advances to face Japan in the gold medal game at 7 a.m. ET. Tennessee alums Lauren Gibson and Raven Chavanne played a big role in the Americans' 6-1 win over Canada early in the day. Gibson went 2-for-2 with a three-run homer in the sixth inning that stretched a 3-1 U.S. lead to a 6-1 advantage. Chavanne had a hit and a run in the win.
Saturday afternoon, Japan jumped out to a big 4-0 lead in the first two innings and added runs in the fourth and the fifth. Kellie Fox drove in Taylor Hoagland for Team USA's lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
