Notes: Senior pitcher Ellen Renfroe started the 2014 season just as strong as she finished 2013, earning wins against Northern Colorado and two-time Southern Conference champ Georgia Southern.
As the opening-day starter, she shut down Northern Colorado on Feb. 7, striking out five over five innings of one-hit ball to lead No. 1 Tennessee to an 8-0, run-rule victory.
On Saturday, Renfroe fanned 10 batters in a two-hit, seven-inning shutout of Georgia Southern as the Lady Vols won, 1-0, thanks to a solo home run by Melissa Davin. The win marked Renfroe's 23rd game with 10 or more strikeouts.
Renfroe now has 56 complete games, moving past older sister Ivy Renfroe (55) for fifth place on Tennessee's all-time complete-games list. She also has 31 career shutouts, a total that is second only to Monica Abbott's 112.
TENNESSEE WEEKLY NOTES
No. 1 Tennessee (4-0) opened the 2014 season with a 4-0 showing in Georgia Southern's Eagle Round Robin from Feb. 7-9.
Several Lady Vols stood out during opening weekend as they hit an SEC-best .376 as a team while pitchers Ellen Renfroe, Cheyanne Tarango, Erin Gabriel and Rainey Gaffin contained opposing hitters from the circle.
On Feb. 7, Tennessee surged past Northern Colorado, 8-0, in five frames to win its season opener for the fourth-consecutive year. UT is now 12-7 all-time in season openers and 10-3 in the year's first game under the direction of Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly. Freshman Megan Geer started her Tennessee career with a bang, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, one run and one stolen base. Geer is the only Tennessee player to start a season with four hits since at least 2000 (records go back to 2001). Geer's four-hit game was just the ninth time since 2003 that a freshman has recorded four hits in a game. She is the sixth Tennessee freshman since 2003 to have a four-hit game. The others were Kristi Durant (2003), Shannon Doepking (2005), Jessica Spigner (2009), Raven Chavanne (four times in 2010) and Kat Dotson (2010).
Sophomore Lexi Overstreet hit UT's first home run of the season, belting a two-RBI shot to right center in the fifth inning of the Lady Vols' 8-3 win over Northern Colorado on Feb. 8. Freshman Taylor Koenig, who hit .500 for the weekend, knocked her first career home run in the same inning.
Renfroe fanned 10 batters over seven shutout innings of two-hit ball and senior Melissa Davin clubbed a solo homer in the second inning as Tennessee defeated two-time Southern Conference champion Georgia Southern, 1-0, on Saturday evening.
On Sunday, UT poured on runs late to blow past Oakland, 14-3. Overstreet hit her second home run in the win and sophomore Haley Tobler had a strong outing in her first career start, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Tarango enjoyed a strong weekend at the plate, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles, and two RBIs. Freshman Shaliyah Geathers also had a hot start to her collegiate career, going 4-for-8 with one double and three RBIs. Geathers had a pinch-hit RBI single in the season opener, earned her first career start at DP against Northern Colorado on Feb. 8 and started in the No. 2 spot against Georgia Southern.
Tennessee next heads to Tampa, Fla., to play Pittsburgh, Binghamton, No. 25/23 USF, Illinois and Wright State in the USF Tournament from Feb. 14-16. All games will be played at USF Softball Stadium and there will be free live audio available through UTSports.com.
