KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore defender Allie Sirna was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week, as announced by the website on Monday.
Tennessee also entered TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Tournament 64 National Ranking for the first time this season at No. 35.
Sirna was one of the key anchors for the UT defense this past weekend and was named to the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic all-tournament team on Sunday. The Solon, Ohio, native played all 197 minutes of game action in Tennessee’s shutout wins over William & Mary and VCU.
Sirna and the back line limited William & Mary and VCU to just 11 combined shots over 196:32 of game action. Playing an attacking-style of defense, Sirna and her teammates never relented momentum to the Tribe or the Rams.
On Friday, the UT defense won a marathon match against William & Mary, allowing just five shots and one corner kick to the Tribe before Caroline Brown’s match-winning penalty kick ended the game.
On Sunday, Sirna and Tennessee played smothering defense once again, holding VCU to take a 2-0 win. The Rams managed just six shots and two corners.
Tennessee’s defense currently stands as the best in the SEC, ranking first in goals allowed (one, 0.25 average) and goals against average (0.24). The Lady Vols’ three shutouts in four games are tied with South Carolina for best in the league.
UT hits the road this week to open a three-game road swing. The Lady Vols will play at Kennesaw State on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Tennessee’s returns to Regal Soccer Stadium on Sept. 14 to open SEC play against Alabama. For tickets to UT home games, go to UTTIX.com.
