KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The shrill sound of head coach Brian Pensky's whistle signals the end of Wednesday afternoon's 11v11 mini games. A cool breeze flows past Regal Soccer Stadium as if to make amends for its absence earlier in the day, but it goes mostly unnoticed. The unforgiving sun and humidity have produced tired legs and sweaty faces to carry the Tennessee soccer players back to the tent to hydrate and corral balls, cones and pinnies.
"Hey that was a GREAT practice, everyone. Best one yet!" senior Amy Harrison sends out while wiping the sweat from her brow.
As a midfielder, Harrison shouts directions across the field to organize the attack. But regardless of when the whistle blows, she lives in that leadership role - something that she has grown into over three years in Tennessee Orange. Everything has a sense of purpose when you stand at the front of the group. That quick shout was meant as a refreshment - more effective than water or the tent's shade - to rally her tired teammates for Pensky's post-practice huddle.
Harrison's leadership from the end of last season through 2012 preseason practice has been vital to the Tennessee soccer program as it begins a new chapter under Pensky's direction.
